Exam...

Okay Tom, so what's this train? I expect you to be able to tell me it's whole history.

Kira,

The photo shows a 2-8-0 class steam locomotive, FCI #67 (Ferrocarril Interoceanico), now displayed at the Monument to the Revolution in Mexico City. It has a wheel arrangement of 2-8-0, meaning: 2-wheel pony (or leading) truck, then 8 main driving wheels, with no (0) trailing wheels under the cab & firebox. It's a narrow-gauge (3-foot track) locomotive that once ran on the Ferrocarril Interoceanio (eventually became NdeM) on the network of rails that ran from Mexico City to Cuautla to Puebla. The city of Cuautla possibly still has one (the #273, another 2-8-0) that they run several miles on the restored narrow gauge main line.

I'm told this is one of several steam engines on static display in Mexico City. Besides the one on display in front of Estacion Buenavista, there is a larger NdeM 4-8-4 on display at the Technological Museum in Chapultepec Park. Then on the east side of town, there's a very small steamer (0-4-0) on static display near the former site of San Lazaro Station.

Further info on the history of some of these engines can be found at:

(see half-way down the page for FCI #67).

Have fun Kira! Hi to Joel too.

Love, Tom

PS...did I pass the exam???

Geez louis sasquatch (love the name)! I would say you get a gold star. We didn't see the NdeM 4-8-4 even though we were in Chapultepec. so maybe next time. Alright, now I'm going to be on the lookout for something more difficult....
p.s. so joel and I are making plans to talk our families into coming here next year for thanksgiving. What do you say? Are you in? There is some really amazing stuff to see, and great food. And fairly cheap. So start saving, okay? And next year we'll have big family trip.
p.p.s. I want a wheel pony. I'm going to get one and I'll bring that and my My Little Ponies to christmas and we can play together!

THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A BR-549, ( LOOK IT UP) BUT THE WEIRD PART IS THE BELL FACING STRAIGHT FORWARD. WHY ?

It is rusted in that position 8^!

ACTUALLY BR-549 is a country western band who wrote a song with Janet Reno. I guess. Go ahead, look it up. And I do believe they glued the bell that what so that it would be forever pointing towards the future and progress. That's the optimistic kind of country this is.
